Compost Is Black Gold

“They’re making more people every day, but they ain’t making any more dirt.”

~ Will Rogers, during the dust bowl days

compost needs air, water, brown material and green material to thrive

At Heirloom Gardens we’re big on compost. Many organic gardeners have eliminated the need for synthetic fertilizer entirely by using the everyday debris you have in and around your home right now. We will help with the design and construction of your compost bin(s) then assist you with successful strategies for long term composting.

Compost bins use natural microorganisms to break down organic material like yard/garden debris and kitchen scraps. It can take years for these items to decompose in the wild, but a well managed compost bin can do the job in months or weeks. The amount of time is reduced by providing optimal conditions for specific microorganisms. These beneficial microorganisms break down dead plant matter into their component parts. The exact parts that your yard needs to add new leaves and buds, grow stronger roots, and produce healthy vegetables and fruits.

Compost not only adds nutrients to the soil, it also increases the ability of the soil to hold water. The same properties that help compost retain water also promote root growth. This increases drought resistance for all plant life saving all of us humans a little more water.
