Why Build Raised Beds?
Here are some great reasons:
• Raised bed gardeners can work from their knees rather than bending on all fours.
• They are space savers with less area devoted to paths.
• They create well-organized, attractive planting areas. Some designs provide for protection against burrowing rodents.
• Raised garden beds save on the amount of compost used because compost is concentrated just in the planting beds.
• If built well, you won't have to remake the beds each spring.
• You typically won't be stepping on the planting bed, compacting the soil, and making it hard for roots to grow.
• You can be creative with design, making spiral or key-hole raised beds for example.
• If you like color, consider planting guilds, groups of vegetables, herbs and flowers that work in harmony with one another, requiring even less work for the gardener.
• It is easy to plant climbers such as beans and cucumbers using an A-frame trellis which fits nicely over a 3-4 foot bed.
• Our raised bed designs often include season extenders such as row covers with PVC hoops over the beds.
