Mission Statement
As certified Permaculture Designers, we believe in following nature’s patterns. Like many good designers, we subscribe to the theory of “The right plants and design elements in the right places.” However, our designs go beyond that. At Heirloom Gardens, we focus on environmentally ethical landscapes that provide a yield as well as beauty and comfort.
We always start with soil and water consumption. In Reno, the soil is usually compromised, resulting in lower yields that require lots of synthetics and pesticides to maintain. We will help break that cycle while reducing water use and providing a bigger bounty.
When we are finished with our masterpiece, we are sure your gardens will use less water than traditional landscaping designs while growing healthy food - what a novel concept!
If you're considering another leap in self-sufficiency, we can help with compost solutions, food preservation, and much, much more. If you are interested in growing more food than you thought possible in Northern Nevada, with less work and water than most people spend on just their lawns, we are the team to help make those dreams come true!

VALARIE RIDER
Owner
valarie@heirloomgardensreno.com

Valarie started Heirloom Gardens in 2011 as a response to her frustration with the environmental challenges facing the planet. It is her goal to create and maintain productive and sustainable landscapes that only benefit the community by never using synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers (which run off into our beloved Truckee River). Using her training as a permaculture designer along with countless hours of education in everything from master gardening to irrigation, she helps her clients grow beautiful organic gardens that give back not only to humans but also to the entire ecosystem. Through the years she has grown her dream and now is a licensed landscaping contractor as well as an ISA certified arborist among other certifications.
DIANE GARLAND
Project Manager
diane@heirloomgardensreno.com

After many years in the corporate world, Diane left her desk job in 2016. Seeing an opportunity to move on to a more meaningful purpose in her life, she turned toward her love of gardening and plants and trained to be a Master Gardener Volunteer. The Master Gardener program was just the thing to put her on track to a more fulfilling career related to Horticulture. Her strong belief in organic and sustainable methods is a win-win for both Diane and Heirloom Gardens. Currently Diane is our Project Manager, designing beautiful, sustainable organic landscapes and managing installations. She is QWEL Certified, has a UNCE Green Industry Nursery Certification and is a member WCISA while studying for her Arborist certification.
